Full-size buick luxury with improved efficiency. introductionthe buick lucerne is a highly competent sedan with smooth, clean lines and driving manners to match. Underway, it's smooth and quiet, but with precise steering and a chassis that handles winding roads with aplomb. Inside, it's elegant, comfortable and easy.  the buick lucerne comes in several models. The lucerne cx is tuned as a traditional buick, with the premium ride suspension. The lucerne cxl comes with a firmer ride and handling suspension, and is positioned to compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 350. We found it a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance.  a full-size, front-wheel-drive sedan, the lucerne benefits from a larger, more powerful, and more efficient v6 for 2009. Horsepower is up 15 percent from 197 to 227; while fuel economy has improved from 16/25 mpg city/highway to 17/26. The lucerne comes loaded with more standard features for 2009, including a bluetooth hands-free phone interface. Xm radio with navtraffic is available.  the v8-powered lucerne super, first introduced as a 2008 model, delivers even more performance for 2009, plus magnetic ride control, an adaptive sports suspension developed for the corvette.  advanced safety systems are available on all models. Lane departure warning uses a camera to warn drivers of inadvertent lane changes. Stabilitrak with brake assist is offered as well.  buick has a long history of innovative engineering, handsomely conservative styling, and premium luxury at below-premium prices. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, seats for five people with a power driver's seat, power windows, power door locks, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, am/fm/cd/mp3 audio with six speakers and steering wheel audio controls, xm satellite radio, cruise control, electrochromic rearview mirror, and remote keyless entry. The cxl suspension is tuned a little tighter, too, and includes airlift rear shocks for automatic level control. Inside, super features a leather-wrapped upper instrument panel with french-seam stitching; heated and cooled leather seats with suede fabric inserts; harman-kardon audio; heated, wood-accented steering wheel on a power tilt-and-telescope steering column; wood shift knob; and other upgraded finishes and trims. The driver confidence and comfort and convenience packages are standard. Outside, the super sports its own unique grille, front and rear fascias, extended rocker panels, and integrated dual exhaust tips. (the dual-depth passenger airbag has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect.) the front seatbelts come with pretensioners, so be sure to wear them. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor are standard on all models. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic, buick waterfall grille blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps.  chrome trim is kept to a minimum. Beside the grille, the only stylistic link to buicks of old is the row of small portholes on each of the front fenders. Flashback to the fifties, when more powerful buicks had more holes. These grille bars turn sharply inward at the top, giving more definition to the waterfall effect. Below the new grille, the look is more familiar, with twin lower air intakes accentuated by chrome slashes that seem to point to the outboard foglights.  the smaller main grille of the cx and cxl is finer in texture, and is now chrome on the cxl as well as the cx. The twin lower air intakes on these models hide behind horizontal grillwork cut into the lower bumper.  the buick lucerne is built on the same platform as the cadillac dts and benefits from modern build techniques for a quiet luxury car. These include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body, and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. We found the bucket seats provide a good level of comfort and come with an armrest in the center console.  rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. Lucerne's long wheelbase allows for a wider-opening rear door with almost no intrusion from the wheel well, making it easy to get in and out of the car. Onstar with turn-by-turn service comes standard and allows customers to talk to a live advisor who downloads complete step-by-step directions to the vehicle through the onstar system. Audio directions are then automatically played through the vehicle's stereo as they are needed, triggered by the onstar system's gps capabilities. Drivers can be directed to their destinations without having to take their hands from the wheel or eyes from the road. New onstar enav allows subscribers to find and save destinations on mapquest. Com, and have those destinations sent to their vehicle's onstar system.  a touch-screen navigation system is also available, giving the lucerne driver the best of both worlds. New onstar destination download enables onstar subscribers with screen-based navigation to quickly input their destination via the press of a button; while new xm navtraffic (available in 80 major north american markets) delivers real-time information about accidents, traffic backups, and road construction directly to the navigation screen. With or without navigation, all 2009 lucernes come with an enhanced xm dis.

2011 buick enclave review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The seats are comfortable, and it can be ordered with a second-row bench seat or luxurious captain's chairs, depending on whether seven- or eight-passenger capacity is needed. It gets an epa-rated 16 city and 22 highway miles per gallon with all-wheel drive, or 17/24 mpg with front-wheel drive.  with the optional trailering package, it can tow up to 4,500 pounds, though we'd prefer the truck-based gmc yukon for serious towing. Enclave rates 5 stars in frontal and side crash for both front and rear occupants, and 4 in rollover, by the national highway traffic safety administration. Luxurious, practical and safe, it's an excellent vehicle.  for 2011, there are few changes. Standard on the upscale cxl-2 model are 19-inch, 9-spoke chromed aluminum wheels, while three new metallic colors have been added.  enclave shares its basic platform with the gmc acadia and chevy traverse, but they are not the same and its styling is considerably different from its siblings. lineupthe 2011 buick enclave is offered in cx and cxl trim levels, each with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). Enclave cxl is also available with awd 40,730).  options include a trailer towing package 455), second-row center console 300), power sunroof with second row skylight 1,400), audio system with touchscreen navigation and dvd rear seat entertainment system 3,185), wheel upgrades and paint upgrades.  safety features that come standard include dual front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain side airbags with rollover deployment, onstar emergency communications (with turn-by-turn navigation), tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes and stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control and rollover mitigation. All-wheel drive enhances safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe exterior design of the buick enclave is more elegant and refined than that of the gmc acadia, which is deliberately truck-like. The enclave carries the latest buick design language. All of the front lighting elements use clear lenses, with lots of different elements to please the eye and light the road. Everything under the bumper is kept simple and clean to draw the eye to that massive grille. The standard tires are 18-inches on seven-spoke alloy wheels, with 19-inch and 20-inch wheels and tires optional, and the big wheel and tire packages certainly add to the visual punch of the enclave. The roof and the side windows are done in a gracefully decreasing sweep from front to rear, accented by bright-metal roof bars that follow the roof's curvature perfectly front to back.  out back, the top-hinged tailgate with standard power opening and closing is a work of art, with the rear glass extending beyond the sheetmetal into the rear opening. The rear glass is quite large, and is convex-shaped, coming to a point just above the buick tri-shield logo and above the wide-screen taillamps. Under the rear bumper is a diffuser panel and dual exhausts with bright tips, making for one of the tastiest rear-end treatments in the crossover segment. interiorthe cabin is what sets the buick enclave apart from other seven- and eight-passenger crossovers. Starting with the double-wave dashboard and instrument panel and going all the way back to the rear cargo floor, it's as modern as tomorrow and as functional as a swiss army knife.  the chrome-ringed white-on-black instruments and analog clock are highly styled, with a soft blue-green illumination and halo lighting at night. The graphics are large and clear, and the wood is real. On the cxl version, the steering wheel is leather and mahogany, with 10 switches and controls mounted on it for easy use. The dead pedal on the far left of the floor was specially designed for use by women wearing high-heeled shoes.  the rearview camera projects on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is not equipped with navigation. In a messy chicago winter, the camera lens became speckled with dirt and salt, making the image hard to see in the rearview mirror. The optional navigation system with a larger screen is preferable.  we also drove the enclave in sunny california, where we gave the navigation system a good test, and it proved problematic, giving us incorrect directions a number of times. It seemed the closer we were to the turn or destination, the more lost it became. A couple of times it routed us around in a big rectangle, to get onto a freeway that was right ahead of us. We should point out that navigation system updates are available, and this might solve the issue.  seven- or eight-passenger seating is available: the standard seven-passenger, 2-2-3 seating scheme uses second-row captain's chairs with a feature called smart slide that allows easy entry into the third row by flopping the seats forward and sliding them fore and aft; this can also be ordered with a second-row console for storage and 12-volt power. Or, there's a second-row bench seat for a 2-3-3 seating scheme and a total of eight occupants.  either way, the driver and front-seat passenger have power seats. The third row is usable for more than just kids; it has enough headroom for adults, and legroom is good for kids and fair for adults. Three kids will fit across, but three adults will find it tight. Only small kids will find the third row comfortable for long trips, though, because the seat bottoms sit too low to provide full thigh support.  the enclave gets high marks for storage space and flexibility. There's 23. 2 cubic feet of cargo room just inside the power tailgate behind the third row, 67. 5 cubic feet with the third-row seats down and 115. 3 cubic feet with both rows folded. Up front, the enclave has storage on top of the dash for sunglasses, ipods, and cell phones. By comparison, the awd cadillac escalade is rated at 12/18 mpg. The buick folks have taken dozens of time-consuming and expensive steps to quiet down the engine, transmission, all-wheel-drive system and tires, to isolate the front and rear suspensions and steering from the cabin and to wrap the entire package in sound-deadening materials in the floor, pillars and doors, all under the heading of quiettuning. Conversations between first-row and third-row occupants at 70-plus mph were heard and understood in normal speaking voices, and the xm satellite music played through loud and clear at reasonable vo.

When introduced, the buick rendezvous crossed over all the lines that used to separate sedans, minivans, and sport-utility vehicles. It's a perfect example of the new category of crossover vehicles, a category that defies categorization. Rendezvous combines aspects of suvs, minivans, and wagons.  for starters, it's versatile, seating five to seven passengers. The styling is nice. It has fine manners on the highway, a benefit of unibody construction normally associated with sedans. There is much to like here in terms of engineering, flexibility, and appearance. The three-row interior compares favorably with the passenger capacity of costlier vehicles. Satellite radio and a rear-seat dvd system are now available as options.  . lineupbuick rendezvous comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Cx awd 28,545) adds the all-wheel-drive system plus anti-lock brakes (abs) and side-impact airbags.  the cx plus package 1925) adds onstar, a driver-information center, overhead console, ultrasonic rear parking assist, a tire-inflation monitor, aluminum wheels and other features, but not abs and side airbags.  the awd cxl package 3530) and fwd cxl package 4655) include all that plus dual-zone air conditioning, leather upholstery, six-way power seats, premium stereo with cassette and cd capability, rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks, and unique exterior trim. Third row seating, optional 465) on all other models, is standard on cxl plus. The head-up display projects salient information on the windshield (low enough to be unobtrusive but clearly visible). Two new options for 2003 are xm satellite radio 325) and a dvd entertainment center 1000). Xm satellite radio features 100 coast-to-coast digital channels, including 71 music channels (more than 30 of them commercial-free) and 29 channels of sports, talk, children's and entertainment programming. The dvd system includes a fold-down seven-inch monitor integrated into the ceiling.  . walkaroundit is difficult to judge the size of the rendezvous without the context of another vehicle near it. That's usually a sign that the design team (headed, by the way, by a woman, liz wetzel) got the scale right. The spec sheet says that rendezvous is as tall as an suv, at 68. 9 inches without the roof rack. But with nearly 64 inches between the left and right tires, buick claims that the rendezvous has a wider track than an suv. Rendezvous' strong horizontal design visually suggests stability as well.  the rendezvous' traditional buick grille emphasizes a familial resemblance to the park avenue, but it somehow looks less formal and more cheery. In short, we like its looks.  . interiorbuick rendezvous can seat up to seven passengers or two people with scads of stuff. Captain's chairs (an elegant choice for just $350) can be ordered instead of the 50-50 split bench seat in the second row. The optional third row seat 465) folds flat into the floor.  the flexibility of the seating configurations is an exercise in automotive origami. The seats fold and tuck and fit into an amazing number of arrangements. For maximum capacity, however, the center row can be removed. (the third-row seat tucks flat into the floor, so it doesn't have to come out.) hiding places and lockable bins are strategically placed here and there.  even with seven inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive, getting in and out of the rendezvous is more like getting in and out of a sedan than an suv; small children, arthritic knees and tight-skirts can be grateful for that. All seats are easy to access and quite comfortable.  access to the third row is far simpler than in most vehicles with three rows of seats. Once back there, the third row is pleasantly suitable for two full-size adults. Well, the rendezvous' rear opening is wide enough to take the proverbial building material lying flat. Well, the buick engineers found a way to do it. Too bad being unobtrusive is a mark of success because this accomplishment needs to stand up and take applause. It's best appreciated when driving with a full load of people and their stuff on a nasty, sleety, darkening afternoon with a slippery glaze on the street.  but all is not sheer delight inside the rendezvous. The plastic used for the instrument panel looks dowdy compared with the rest of the interior.  . driving impressionbuick rendezvous has reassuring road manners. Its long wheel base (six inches longer than that of the grand cherokee) smoothes surface irregularities like a sedan or a minivan.  in handling the more sinuous highways, again it favors the minivan/sedan end of the scale. Driven in the truly twisty bits the rendezvous comported itself surprisingly well. Gm's all-wheel-drive system, called versatrak, requires no input from the driver. Versatrak drives just the front wheels until sensors agree that some traction assistance from the rear is advisable. Now this is where the versatrak is really clever: power is meted out separately and individually to each rear wheel, not just to the rear axle. The result is better traction and increased stability, making the rendezvous more capable in the snow and easier to drive in the slush.  overall, the road demeanor of the rendezvous is pleasing. It stopped well, accelerated with reasonable aplomb (can't everything use more power?) and was quiet for an suv, though a little road-noisy by luxury sedan standards.  buick rendezvous deserves a look on the basis of economy alone. In the first place it uses regular unleaded gas, not premium. Its thirst is temperate for its size: 24 miles per gallon on the highway with versatrak, 26 mpg for the front-wheel-drive models.  . summarybuick rendezvous is as comfortable as it is practical.
